Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years in China and since the 1970’s in Western medicine.  According to traditional Chinese medical theory, acupuncture points are located on meridians, through which vital energy runs. This energy is known as “qi” or “chi.”

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points of the body. By inserting the needles into acupuncture points it helps stimulate nerves, muscle and tissue in your body. This stimulation encourages the body to release certain chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin. Acupuncture can reduce inflammation, pain, improve your immune system and promote healing.

Here at CK Clinic we can use acupuncture as a stand alone treatment or alongside physiotherapy treatment. CK Clinic has 3 Physiotherapists qualified to carry out acupuncture for all MSK (Musculoskeletal) related issues, if you are looking for acupuncture for anxiety, depression and chronic fatigue please seek a traditional acupuncturist.

Acupuncture can be used to help with;

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Tight muscles
  • Migraines/Headaches

Acupuncture in Chippenham at CK Clinic

At the initial consultation your Physiotherapist will complete an assessment which will include your medical history and specific details of your injury/problem.

You will be asked to lie down on their back, front, or one side, depending on where the needles are to be inserted. your Physiotherapist will use single-use, disposable, sterile needles. As each needle is inserted, you may feel a very brief stinging or tingling sensation.

After the needle is inserted, there is occasionally a dull ache at the base of the needle which then subsides. Acupuncture is usually relatively painless. The needles remain in place for approximately 10-25 minutes and are then disposed of in the sharps bin. All of our needles are single use.

Side effects of acupuncture are rare, although you may experience some bruising or bleeding if you are taking blood thinning medication. Steph will discuss any risks and run through specific after care for your treatment.

Dry Needling in Chippenham at CK Clinic

Dry Needling is similar to acupuncture where a fine needle is inserted into a muscle to provoke a muscle stimulation. The fine filament needles used in dry needling are the same ones we use in CK Clinic for acupuncture. Whereas acupuncture follows a channel theory based on meridian lines throughout the body, dry needling is more focused on targeting muscular trigger points in the area and using a strong stimulation to get the muscle to release. Dry needling is sometimes known as trigger point therapy. Whereas acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is more recent being developed in the 1980’s.

By inserting the needle into the tight muscle it creates a response which releases the trigger point and restores normal function. Dry needling is great for reducing pain, increasing blood flow to the muscle and decreasing the muscle tightness. Not only does dry needling reduce the local pain but also helps to reduce the referred pain too caused by the trigger point (often patients have headaches due to trigger points in their shoulders/trapezius).

Initial assessment including treatment (45 minutes) is £50 and then follow up treatment sessions (30 minutes) are £40.
